Requirements to Use the PC QUILTER

You only need to have a basic, simple knowledge of Windows to use the PC Quilter. That includes the ability to use Windows Explorer to find files and folders, copy files between folders, delete files, rename files, understand the hierarchical nature of folders on Windows, understand the format of file names (such as having .txt or .exe on the end and what that means) and use the dialog boxes and pull down menus that are part of everyday Windows. Also, you need to know how to attach a file to an email if our tech support people need to help you with a problem. And finally, you need to know how to save a file from an email if we need to send a file to you to solve a problem. Just as one example, most users who are putting digital images into their PC and emailing them and receiving the same, know how to do all the above.

You do not need to know anything complicated but you need to know more than just how to turn on the PC and click on the email button!

If you intend to design your own patterns, which is optional, you should also know how to connect and use a scanner, and save an image in common formats such as .BMP. In addition, you need to be able to use simple text editing software such as WordPad or NotePad - standard Windows features. Not much different than typing an email and making changes as you type along.

If all the info above is a mystery, give our sales department a call and discuss your abilities with them. They can help you evaluate your skills. Also, there are many ways to acquire the small amount of Windows skills you need. We can advise you on that too. We have customers who are 80 - 90 years old who use the PC Quilter and those customers did not grow up with computers!

YOU MUST BE WILLING TO READ OUR INSTRUCTION BOOK.

You do not need to be a Geek or a computer techie. The manual is written in plain English with lots of examples and diagrams. There is tech support - you can email or call. Please see the current tech support hours on our contact page. We can't teach you Windows, but we can help you with any technical difficulties you may have.

If you don't like to read manuals, or are baffled about how your computer and Windows work, the PC Quilter may not be for you!

Now, on to some requirements regarding your quilting frame, your PC, and your sewing machine. We provide this info so you have no surprises after purchase.

Current software included with the PC Quilter will run on any IBM compatible Pentium 2 or better PC with 256 meg of RAM. It does not require a new PC - an older PC which can be obtained for almost free is usually fine if it meets the preceding requirements. The PC Quilter runs on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. It does not require much disk space at all - our software is not Bill Gates bloat-ware. Pattern files are not even very large. You can connect the PC Quilter to your PC using parallel port, serial port, or USB.

If you want to digitize patterns, you will need a computer that is at least a
- Pentium 4 running at at least 1.5GHz with 512 meg of RAM
- Screen resolution of 1024 x 768
- Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 software
- 30 megabytes of disc space.

All modern computers built in the past few years greatly exceed the above requirements. The least expensive new computer now made is plenty adequate. We just provide the above for those who have an old PC laying around (or their friend has one).

Our electronics, motors and other innards are all sandwiched between our PC Quilter upper and lower carriages. Those carriages, which are functionally the same as your existing quilt frame carriages, need to fit on your existing quilting frame rails. Your quilting frame may require minor, inexpensive, easy modifications. We have all that documented for you. You use PC Quilter carriages for automated quilting and you use your quilting frame's carriages for free-motion quilting. You can switch back and forth if you purchase the Side Mounted PC Quilter rather than the Standard PC Quilter.

The PC Quilter works on US or international power (90 - 264 volts AC, 47 to 63 hertz frequency). You will need to change the power cord for foreign use.
